Professional Teacher Status (PTS) Awards in Attleboro Schools
In years past, the Attleboro Public Schools maintained a tradition of recognizing educators upon achieving Professional Teacher Status (PTS), formerly known as tenure. This milestone was celebrated with a special ceremony organized by the School Committee, where teachers were honored for their dedication and commitment to education.
Tradition and Evolution of PTS Recognition
Historical Tradition:
Historically, the recognition ceremonies for PTS were marked by a symbolic gesture: educators were presented with candles housed in brass holders on a wooden base. This ensemble symbolized the lamp of knowledge, a classic emblem representing enlightenment and education. During these events, officials expressed gratitude to the honored teachers for their service and contributions to the school community.
Evolution and Revival:
The annual tradition of celebrating PTS and awarding the lamp of knowledge ceased in 2004. However, in 2017, under the leadership of Superintendent David Sawyer and Assistant Superintendent Laurie Regan, the practice was revived. Over the subsequent six years, educators achieving PTS were once again acknowledged, albeit with a modern adaptation: glass plaques replaced the traditional lamp of knowledge. Additionally, educators who had previously missed out on recognition were retroactively honored, ensuring their contributions were duly celebrated.
Redesigning the PTS Recognition Process
Collaborative Effort & Partnership with Students:
This year, the District Recognition Team, a collaborative initiative between the Attleboro Education Association and District Administration, embarked on redesigning the PTS recognition process. Central to this effort was a desire to reimagine the award itself. Under the guidance of Dan Brillon, Career and Technical Education Welding and Metal Fabrication Instructor at Attleboro High School, a new award design was conceived. Dan and his students collaborated closely on crafting a modern interpretation of the lamp of learning. This redesigned symbol not only pays homage to the lamp of knowledge's historical significance but also embodies the achievement of Professional Teacher Status in a contemporary and visually striking manner.
Unveiling and Recognition:
On June 6th of this year, the culmination of these efforts was celebrated with a ceremony honoring educators for their excellence and commitment in the field of education. The newly designed lamp of learning was unveiled, showcasing the dedication and skill that went into its creation. This event not only recognized individual achievements but also underscored the community's ongoing commitment to valuing and celebrating educators.
