We are looking forward to a spectacular solar eclipse on April 8, 2024, from 2:15 PM - 4:38 PM. This rare event is a wonderful opportunity to marvel at the wonders of the universe. Students will be leaving school shortly before or during the event. As part of our commitment to educational experiences that inspire curiosity and discovery, we are providing all APS students with special viewing glasses to safely observe the eclipse.
What is a solar eclipse?
A solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth. The result is the blocking of the sun, creating a darkened sky. (science.nasa.gov)
How can I enjoy the eclipse safely?
Our priority is safety, so please remember to follow these important safety precautions. Looking at the sun directly without safe viewing glasses will result in eye injury.
Wear approved viewing glasses. These glasses are specially designed to protect your eyes from the harmful rays of the sun during an eclipse. Regular sunglasses do not provide adequate protection.
Supervise children to ensure they are wearing viewing glasses properly.
Take breaks. Viewing the eclipse for an extended period of time can strain your eyes.
Do not use cameras or binoculars (unless they are equipped with specifically designed solar filters). Using an unfiltered device can cause eye injury.
We encourage families to discuss eye safety for an eclipse and to remind students that viewing the eclipse without special glasses can have long term health impacts.
