Troubleshooting Common Problems with Your Chromebook

Reset Your Chromebook

Many common problems with Chromebooks can be resolved by resetting the device, also known as Power Washing. Power Washing erases the Chromebook's hard drive and resets the device back to factory settings. By default, all of your files and settings are stored in your Google Drive so you will not lose any files or information. The only items stored locally are files that were downloaded from the internet to the hard drive. If you need to keep these files it is recommended to move them to your Google Drive.

Before beginning this procedure, make sure you have access to a Wi-Fi network that you can login into to restore the Chromebook settings. Doing this in school will not work as you will not be able to connect back to the Wi-Fi without an OIT Technician.

Step1: Power on the Chromebook, do not log into it.

Step 2: Press the following keys all at the same time - Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R

Step 3: The Reset Chromebook screen will appear. Click Powerwash at the bottom of the screen.

Step 4: Click Continue to confirm the Powerwash.

Step 5: Click through the screens to continue. When the Get Connected page pops up, attach to the available Wi-Fi network that you have a password for.

Step 6: The Chromebook will update if necessary and run the Enterprise Enrollment. Click on Done when completed. You should now be able to log back into the Chromebook.
