First Grade has been busy providing personalized academic and social-emotional learning experiences, ensuring the development toward students’ full potential.
Reading:
Students have been reading a variety of different nonfiction and fiction stories. First graders are working in reading groups at their independent levels each week. They have been diligently working each day towards increasing their Lexia level. Students continue to read their “book bags” independently, often choosing their “just right” books. Classes are working on increasing sight words and learning enriching new vocabulary words.
Writing: First graders have been working on writing more than one sentence which includes correct letter formation, spacing, capitals and punctuation all on one topic. Most recently, they have been beginning to discuss writing nonfiction stories as a class. Classes have been writing about bees, butterflies, elephants, firetrucks and turtles.
Math: We are working on using a 120 chart to find 10 more and 10 less of various numbers. We have also been diligently working on increasing our STMath percentage each week. First graders began working on telling time to the hour and half hour on an analog clock.
Science: First graders have been learning about the sun, moon and stars. They have tracked the phases of the moon as well as observed how shadows change throughout the day. Students had a blast using flashlights to create constellations! Students also created a leprechaun launch during a STEAM lesson.
Social Emotional: First grade has continued to use the Second Steps program to learn how to identify feelings, problems and how to solve them. They are also working on learning the difference between “tattling” and “reporting.” They have learned vocabulary and acted out ways to solve problems in class and out at recess.
