Next Week and Beyond
Next week we do not have school. Enjoy February break. Our next update will be February 28. Please see below for our odd/even schedule for the rest of the month.
All Grade 9 Families: SBIRT Screening
Beginning March 3, 2025, our school’s health staff will begin a health screening called SBIRT. SBIRT stands for Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment. SBIRT is used to screen for alcohol, nicotine, tobacco, and other drug use. This health screening is required by Massachusetts law.
Students in the 9th grade will take part in this screening which takes about 5-10 minutes. School health staff will have one-on-one conversations with students. They will ask students about alcohol, nicotine, tobacco, or other drug use over the past year. Staff will then talk with each student about how to support their overall health, safety, and success in school. If the student needs more assessment or support, health staff may work with the student and/or their parent/guardian.
The questions asked during this screening are listed in the attached CRAFFT screening tool. Please read this tool, which has been approved by the Department of Public Health. Please note:
Screening results are recorded. No information that could identify a student is kept (for example, name or date of birth).
Screening results will not go into the student’s school record.
Screening results will not be shared without the permission of the student or their parent/guardian. However, results may be shared in the case of immediate medical emergency, or when required by state law.
As with any school health screening, you can opt your child out of this process. Students themselves may also choose not to take part. If you do not want your child to participate in this screening or if you have questions, contact Julie Little at Jlittle@attleboroschools.com, before screenings begin.
Parents and guardians can help their children make healthy choices. One important way to prevent alcohol and drug use is to talk with them about your thoughts and expectations. Some resources that can help these discussions include:
DESE School Report Card for AHS
Every year the Department of Early and Secondary Education (DESE) provides school communities with a school report card. Below is information regarding this year’s report card.
Dear Families:
Every year, each public school and school district in Massachusetts receives a report card. Just as your child’s report card shows how they are doing in different subjects, the school’s report card is designed to show families how our school is doing in different areas. A link to our school’s report card is available at School and District Report Cards - Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education
The report card includes multiple measures of a school’s performance – more than just MCAS scores. It represents a new way of looking at school performance, by providing information on student achievement, teacher qualifications, student learning opportunities, and more.
Report cards are designed to be useful tools for everyone connected to our school. Families can use the information to have meaningful conversations with us about what the school is doing well and where there is room for improvement. Community and education leaders can use the information to better understand how to support students and our school.
You will notice on our report card that we are doing well in some areas, such as graduation rates, and can improve in others. To improve student performance in our school, we continue to implement appropriate intervention strategies for all different types of learners. We encourage you to become involved in helping us improve our school. We see parents as critical partners in the success of our students and school, and we are grateful for your continued support.
Finally, if your child attends a school that receives federal Title I funds, you also have the right to request the following information about the qualifications of your child’s classroom teachers:
Whether your child’s teacher is licensed in the grade levels and subject areas they teach,
Whether your child’s teacher is teaching under an emergency license or waiver,
The college degree and major of your child’s teacher, and
Whether your child is provided services by paraprofessionals and, if so, their qualifications.
If you have questions about our school’s report card, would like to become involved in school improvement activities, or would like to request information about the qualifications of your child’s classroom teacher, please contact me. To see our district’s report card or to search for other schools’ report cards, visit reportcards.doe.mass.edu.
Sincerely,
Kate Campbell

Reminder: SAT School Day Opportunity for Grade 11 Students
This spring we are offering grade 11 students the option to take the SAT during the school day. We plan to administer the test on Wednesday, April 16 during the school day. This is a convenient alternative to the Saturday administration as it can help you minimize the need to juggle work and other weekend commitments.
This test will be administered digitally. Students will use their own school-issued device. To register, please complete this form by February 28. DO NOT REGISTER THROUGH COLLEGE BOARD FOR THIS ADMINISTRATION.
The cost of the exam is $60. The College Board does not allow SAT fee waivers for school day administrations. Once your test is ordered, you will be notified where and how to pay for your exam. Please keep in mind that this is an optional exam.
If you have questions about the SAT School Day or college and career planning, please reach out to me or your child’s counselor—we’re here to help!
CTE Update
The Blue Pride Bistro will be open for business on February 27th and 28th. We look forward to serving you!
A Note from Our Nurses
It is that time of year where we typically see an increase in illness, and we would like to take an opportunity to remind families of the importance of having up-to-date contact information at the school for us to reach you in a time of need. We are also asking that you have additional emergency contacts that are available to pick up the child if needed. If the nurse calls for the student's dismissal, it is standard practice for the dismissal to occur within the hour. In the graphic below you will find helpful tips and guidelines for addressing illness symptoms including when to send your child to school, keep them at home, or even seek medical attention. Thank you in advance for your support so we can continue to provide the best care for all students. If you have questions, please contact us at ahsnurses@attleboroschools.com
