Internet Filtering & Safeguards

As part of our compliance with the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA), Attleboro Public Schools implements filtering technology and monitoring practices to block harmful content and protect students online. All Chromebook devices issued by the district are set up to filter inappropriate content both in school and at home through Aristotle K12. It’s important to note that the filtering criteria may differ between home and school settings, which will be discussed in detail later in this document.

While these filters are highly effective, no system can block 100% of inappropriate material due to the constant addition of new content, including games and images. In the classroom, teachers actively monitor student internet usage and utilize filtering tools to create a safe online environment. At home, we encourage parents to supervise their children, set clear expectations for internet use, and engage in discussions about internet safety and good digital citizenship.

By working together—teachers, parents, and the district—we can promote safe and responsible internet use for all students.

Content Filtering
All student devices, whether used on-campus or off-campus, are filtered for age-appropriate content through the district’s filtering system, Aristotle K12.

Filtered Content
Blocked content includes:

  • Adult-oriented content (e.g., nudity, pornography)

  • Weapons and violence

  • Alcohol and drugs

  • Hate speech

  • Social media platforms not related to education

  • Credit card processing and online payment systems

In-School Filtering
In addition to Aristotle K12, web filtering is reinforced by the district’s internet firewalls, which block:

  • Non-educational games

  • Social media

  • Streaming services (YouTube is restricted to educational content)

  • Message boards, chat rooms, and listservs

Teachers also have the ability to override a website block temporarily for educational purposes in the classroom.

After-School & Weekend Filtering
After school hours, some content restrictions are relaxed to allow:

  • Streaming services

  • Age-appropriate games

  • YouTube content (sports, pets, humor, music, comedy, in addition to educational content)

Age-Appropriate Filtering
Our internet filters are customized by grade level to ensure students have access to age-appropriate content. Content availability varies across elementary, middle, and high school levels, with more sensitive topics being filtered to align with developmental stages and educational needs.

Student Monitoring
All student devices are monitored for inappropriate activity such as:

  • Hate speech

  • Violence

  • Bullying

  • Self Harm

Every website a student visits is logged by date and time, and keystrokes are recorded for oversight purposes. This ensures accountability and helps protect students from online dangers.

Students and parents should have reviewed and acknowledged the Acceptable Use Policy as described in the Student Handbook. This policy outlines the responsible and ethical use of technology in Attleboro Public Schools and applies to all student device usage.
