Welcome to Attleboro Public Schools!

We are a district on the move in our Journey Toward Excellence and our vision and goal is that powerful learning takes place for every student every day in every classroom in every school. What does powerful learning like?  For Attleboro’s students, we do not want our students to simply learn to read, recall facts, solve math problems, or write reports.  We want Attleboro’s students, from an early age, to analyze and appreciate literature to better understand our world, to use math as a valuable tool to see relationships and patterns in their daily lives, and to write essays that share their point of view and why it is important to them.  Powerful learning also means being able to work with others toward common goals and show real effort while developing habits of mind that will fuel a life-long passion for learning that begins in our schools and continues long after they graduate.  And ongoing professional development and training reflects the investment we continue to make in our educators to ensure that strong powerful learning takes place.

How can you see powerful learning in action?  Come and visit our schools!  We have five elementary schools serving Grades K-4: Hill-Roberts, Hyman Fine, Studley, Willett, and Thacher (which also serves our pre-schoolers in our Early Learning Center).  We have three middle schools serving Grades 5-8: Brennan, Coelho, and Wamsutta.  And our comprehensive Attleboro High School is home to Grades 9-12 with some of the most rigorous graduation requirements in the region along with an equally challenging Career and Technical Education Program in 13 choice areas that includes such programs as pre-engineering, medical assisting, culinary arts, and design and visual communication.  The District Improvement Plan gives a picture of the exciting teaching and learning work that is happening in our schools.

Our educators and support staff, along with our principals and administrators are deeply passionate about their work in serving the Attleboro community.  Our buildings are sparkling and well-maintained thanks to a custodial staff that is deeply proud of our facilities.  With our city and state officials, we are in the process of working toward replacing Attleboro High School’s roof – a long-term project that was recently approved by the Massachusetts School Building Authority.

As we plan for the FY10 Budget next year, we face extremely difficult economic times.  Despite these challenges, we will continue to work – with all our stakeholders - to stay the course in creating the excellent education our children and families have a right to expect and receive.  We know our schools can not do this work alone and I look forward to your support as we work toward that future together.

With warm regards,

Pia Durkin, Ph.D.
